What is Autism?
Autism Now Affects 1 in every 105 Children in the United States
Autism is a disorder that is present from birth or very early in development that affects essential human behaviors such as social interaction, the ability to communicate ideas and feelings, imagination, and the establishment of relationships with others. It generally has life-long effects on how children learn to be social beings, to take care of themselves, and to participate in the community. Autism is a developmental disorder of neurobiological origin that is defined on the basis of behavioral and developmental features. Although precise neurobiological mechanisms have not yet been established, it is clear that autism reflects the operation of factors in the developing brain. As yet, known direct links between pathophysiology and behavior in autism are still rare and have not yet had great influence on treatments or diagnosis. Nevertheless, current biological research, such as genetics, may already have important implications for families and children with autism spectrum disorders.
Autism is best characterized as a spectrum of disorders that vary in severity of symptoms, age of onset, and associations with other disorders (e.g. mental retardation, specific language delay, epilepsy). The manifestations of autism vary considerably across children and within an individual child over time. There is no single behavior that is always typical of autism and no behavior that would automatically exclude an individual child from diagnosis of autism, even though there are strong and consistent commonalities, especially in social deficits.

| Susan and her husband, Frank have graciously offered to make a donation for every real estate sale to help the Jensen Beach Elementary Program, where her son Mathew attends school. Here is what one teacher had to say about Susan's involvement in the programs: |
| |
Susan Maxwell has been an incredible asset to the Jensen Beach Autism Community. She has assisted in several charity Golf events and various fund raisers to support the program.
Susan has donated portions of her profits from real estate sales to benefit classroom activities such as pizza parties to celebrate events. In addition to these activities Susan has been the parent liaison for parents of children with Autism throughout the Jensen Beach community.
Through this position she has assisted parents in dealing with their child's diagnosis, offered information regarding her son's progress and the contribution the Jensen Beach Elementary Program has had in his success. Susan has helped parents realize that the diagnosis of Autism is not the end of social experiences for their child or family.
She initiated parties for her child and invited all students in the program to participate. Initially the response was minimal as parents were unsure of their child's ability, but in time families saw the positive social effect parties and social activities outside of the school environment had on their children.
Currently Susan also sponsors monthly parent get-togethers to encourage socialization for parents of children with Autism who often feel they are unable to participate in social activities when their child receives a diagnosis of Autism due to lack of understanding and compassion for the daily struggles the family endures. Susan has helped many families and children improve their lives and return to more typical social experiences which in turn have improved the quality of life for many families and their children.
The successes of our program and the continued social progress seen in our students are due to the continued efforts of Susan Maxwell and others who believe in children as a whole and Autism as a secondary characteristic that sometimes makes life more challenging. |

New January 11, 2008:
Scott Proctor, pitcher for the L.A. Dodgers, and his wife, Carrie, have established a foundation, M.E.'s Team, with a "mission to make a major impact in the lives of children throughout the Treasure Coast ". M.E.'s Team is their foundation that they have formed in the name of their daughter, Mary Elizabeth, who was born in 2006 with a very underdeveloped main artery of her heart, in which she needed immediate life-saving surgery. We met with Mr. Proctor and his agent, Mr. Mark Rodgers, a few weeks ago and shared all the wonderful stories from last season of the Challenger Program. I am so excited to share with everyone that Mr. and Mrs. Proctor and M.E.'s Team foundation has chosen the Challenger Division as a beneficiary of their foundation. As a recipient of M.E.'s Team, we are truly fortunate to receive financial support to the program which will assist with the continuation and growth of the program, as well as the initiative to build a "Miracle Field" in our community. |
