Willoughby Golf Club Homes
Think of Willoughby as a place to go to after work, not a
place to retire. That’s because members are former executives and professionals,
both men and women, who came from 29 states and 6 countries seeking to fill
their lives with different activities, not fewer. For many, who previously
played at some of the world’s most prestigious clubs, golf is the focal point.
Others choose tennis or fishing, but all fill their nights with theater,
concerts and relaxing dinners with friends. Somehow these calendars almost make
their former schedules seem uncluttered.
Common to all this is a shared member appreciation of the tasteful in life and
the passion needed to experience it everyday. This and a strong sense of
collegiality have led to friendships that form quickly in the community and
endure as time goes on. No wonder members say that for them being at home in
Willoughby is the ideal answer to the age-old question of what to do after work.
Arthur Hills designed the Willoughby course with four sets of tees to make sure both men and women golfers are suitably challenged, but never faced with the sense of either hopelessness or monotony you find in less imaginative Florida layouts. From the championship tees used in US Open qualifiers, the course plays to 6,731 yards between towering trees and natural wetlands, over unfriendly lakes and around more than 55 all too inviting bunkers. In keeping with the Arthur Hills tradition, Willoughby is carved out of the natural surroundings and makes abundant use of all available flora, hillocks and swales to create the most picturesque golf course in the area. The resultant varied terrain ensures that shot selection at Willoughby never seems repetitive and with each day’s round the sense of challenge and fascination is renewed.
